oxford university is an extremely diverse university, students from more than one hundred and forty countries and territories make up a student population of over twenty thousand. there is no clear date that the school was founded, but teaching of some sort has been taking place since 1096. the university has 38 independent and self-governing colleges, some of which were established in the 13th century, and 6 permanent private halls. all colleges accept both men and women.
